The phrase “worthless fellow” appears numerous times in the Bible. Typically, worthless fellows were depicted as faithless men who mindlessly pursued godless activity. Doesn’t that sound a lot like a typical sinner? In fact, that sounds a lot like me, someone worthy only of judgment and the curse of death. (Romans 3:12) But by the divine grace of God alone, through faith alone, on account of Christ’s salvation work on the cross alone, I’ve been declared righteous before Him.
While still in the flesh, I’m now simultaneously sinner and saint, striving every day to fight against sin and seeking to destroy it.
History provides many examples of others that faithfully pursued the pure doctrines of Scripture and sought to destroy false doctrines. In those cases they were considered worthless fellows by the opponents of the truth. All the Apostles but John died martyrous deaths. When Jas Hus (1369-1415) rediscovered the pure doctrine he was burned at the stake. When Martin Luther (1483-1546) rediscovered it the Holy Roman Emperor declared him an outlaw and legalized his murder. I thank God for all these saved “worthless fellows” who are precious in His sight.
